Relationship between
photography and psychiatry

This thesis delves into the relationship between photography and psychiatry. Both were invented in the Nineteenth Century and progressed simultaneously. During my time at the art academy, the psyche, the human mind, and psychiatry kept reappearing in my work. The parallels between the simultaneous rise of the two in history and the intertwinement in my work are inescapable. They are the pillars from which my work is created.

I write about the different points regarding both topics; my own experiences and the medium of photography, philosophy and science.

The thesis consists of three essays:

The single minded interpretation of the norm — Where is the line between normal and abnormal, and who draws that line? When do we see a person and when does that person change into their disease?

Blind Sight — The history of psychiatry and its relationship with photography. This essay dives into (societal) perception, how our opinions are shaped regarding people, and what role the media plays in this process.

Hysteria — Where fantasy and reality meet — Hysteria approached from different angles; the relationship between body and mind and between hysteria and dance/theater. The fine line between authentic and learned, fantasy and reality.
