In the early years of psychiatry and photography (1850-1880), Hysteria was often photographed and photos were used as scientific evidence to support the medical theory. The positions and movements of women were a central part of it, where the body served as the ‘key’ to the inner psyche. The Great Hysteria Attack as Jean-Martin Charcot displayed, around 1880 was probably a Dissociative Disorder. This disorder is a symptom, as explained in the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and is diagnosed in multiple psychiatric illnesses. How many different variations, levels and shapes can be found? Are they always visible? These bodily movements served as the start of my visual exploration. It flows by the notorious prison Angola (Louisiana State Penitentiary). When I zoomed in on Google Maps Street View I saw people there, inside the gates. This made this abstract and detached image seem more personable. This was the start to my journey researching the history of this place and the American prison system. Many of Angola’s guards grew up outside the prisons walls. The job moves from generation to generation, the prison being a source of income for families — most are white Americans. Angola is surrounded by farmland that was worked by enslaved peoples before the Civil War. Now the descendants of those same black enslaved peoples — 80% of Angola’s population — are those locked within the prison walls. All are a product of their cultural background. The roles remain the same with no escape from the wealthy privatised prison system. Taking screenshots of the terrain and surroundings, I created a new map, one where the boundaries have faded and the separating wall disappears. The people, places, and objects tell their own stories. Throughout the years I started collecting the photographs taken at different shoots. Together they now tell another story and have become a collective. As the images where created during different assignments and projects, I now apply the same method to string them together. I set the stage for my work, yet I still leave room for chance and utilise the accidental gifts I find on my way. As the title says; this is an Ongoing Series, it will grow with the years. Our perception provides only a limited analysis as our brain fills in the remaining details. The result is that our experience of a situation is clear and fluid. What we do not realise is that we fill in the blanks with fragments from our own experiences. We create our own reality. I translated this concept by creating a grey scale* as my origin point. The original was created in a darkroom, later using different photocopiers to make reproductions of this original. The machines all scanned the same image. Yet the machines processed the information in different ways, i.e. perception. Not one machine recreated the same image when it came to shades and colours. Below you can find the differences in shading and colouring in the image. *a grey scale; The reality is not black or white, it lies in between the two colours — an endless grey scale that knowns countless tones. Was the captured moment manipulated or augmented? For my thesis, The Relationship Between Photography and Psychiatry (2017), I wrote about multiple subjects surrounding this matter. What fascinates me is that both the emotional and the psyche have an impact on the body. Furthermore this impact can have both visible and invisible repercussions. The series includes portraits shot from a concept and that have later been modified. Archival materials mix with new images. They are there for our safety, but do they prevent crime or other (violent) incidents? How many images are ultimately used as evidence in criminal cases? How reliable are these images when not contextualised? We seem to take the cameras in public space for granted. However, how many images are there of you? How long and where are the images stored? Are you sure they will not be used against you one day? I want to trigger the viewer to think about these implications. At the same time I want to open up the poetic world that is created by those same images. If I were a Surveillance Guard, I would dream-up compositions, zoom in on interactions, let myself be carried along in the flow of people. I would drown in the details or zoom out to how we move around in our environment, like an improvised choreography created by the people and the city. The government’s advice was to stay indoors as much as possible. As the outside world turned upside down, our feeling of home changed as well. To visualize this concept David and I transformed living rooms into Camera Obscuras (Latin: dark room). An abstract realm of the outside world intertwined with the indoor spaces. The abstract reflection of the outside world invaded the living rooms and reflected the lockdown experience. While we hide indoors from the intangible, the outside world elusively passes by. The result is a mix of abstract, vague and chaotic images - a representation of the time in which we live.
